Questions and Answers: choosing the right balustrades and handrails suppliers

Architects and designers have some important points to consider when choosing a handrails and balustrades supplier. Essentially, you need to ask a series of key questions and only select a handrails and balustrades supplier which answers each one in the affirmative…

1)     Does the handrails and balustrades supplier have the right credentials?

In other words – does the supplier have the necessary technical expertise to engage with complex design concepts, produce suitable solutions and provide reliable support throughout the supply process.  It’s also absolutely vital that the supplier can provide solutions which meet all compliance needs and Building Regulations.

With over 40 years in design and manufacturing, neaco’s expertise and credentials are impeccable. Our modular handrails and balustrade solutions offcially meet (and in many ways perform beyond) all Building Regulations. You can have peace of mind in knowing that we’re up to the task.

2)     Does the supplier use CAD-based design?

Three letters – CAD – speak volumes when it comes to handrails and balustrades design. Make sure that your supplier provides detailed CAD drawings – if they don’t, you’re risking a lot of technical innaccuracy and a misunderstanding of your specification.

neaco have been utilising CAD for decades – detailed CAD drawings are always supplied for approval of our customers’ specifications.

3)     Can they provide 3D visualisation software?

Better still, three other letters – BIM – provide even more benefits. Some suppliers are now utilising intelligent model-based Building Information Modelling (BIM) which is ideal for planning, design and construction. It offers a broad portfolio of tools for design and simulation which allow you to visualise your concept and the supplier’s proposed solution from all angles.

neaco now offer  a suite of BIM models from our extensive library – please contact our technical team for further details.

4)     Can the supplier provide professional structural calculations?

This is another essential – it basically guarantees that the supplier’s product meets the standards required by building inspectors. If they don’t, the result could be a drain on time and costs.

neaco’s handrails and balustrades systems offer a modular component-based system with structural calculations perfomed by independent engineers. It brings immediate peace of mind for our customers.

5)     Are the supplier’s products and materials fully tested?

You need to know that the handrails and balustrades can perform their safety and load-bearing requirements, especially elements like glass panel infills which require certain degrees of strength depending on the type or nature of the installation.

All of neaco’s handrails and balustrades are fully tested and we provide full test data available on request.

6)     Can the supplier provide a reliable source contact to deal with any concerns?

Ideally the supply process can be completed without any issues, but that can’t always be the case and if so you need to know that you have at least one person at the supplier’s end who you can turn to when you have a concern.

At neaco, we have a dedicated technical team assigned to your project – if an issue needs to be addresses, we have experts at hand.

7)     Am I getting value for money without compromising quality?

If the first six questions can be answered with a definite ‘yes’ and the quotation seems competitive, then you’ve found a suitable supplier! Remember that prices can vary as much as quality, so make sure you’ve got some assurances about both.

neaco offer a price match promise – we’re happy to provide a like-for-like quote for any design brief so you can make a direct comparision. We also have a class-leading Lifetime Guarantee proving that with neaco you truly get Modularity by Design – GUARANTEED!

The company’s design team worked with CTD Architects to create a new Juliet balcony outside of the standard specification, incorporating stanchions with offset glass panels. neaco also provided balustrades in six stairwells across three buildings as part of a complex project which had to be completed within a tight build schedule with residents continuing to live in the apartments throughout the programme.

Steve Tipper of CTD Architects said: “We wanted a contemporary aesthetic and that’s why we chose neaco. Their balcony systems provide design versatility with modular components which combine for a made-to-measure solution.  In terms of installation, it was a technically challenging project and neaco dealt with any issues quickly and effectively. Introducing our semi-structural glass balustrade

A stylish and minimalist balustrade alternative to traditional balustrade is now available with the launch of Elan, a semi-structural glass balustrade from neaco.

Most balustrade designs secure glass infill panels in place by attaching them to the stanchions with a clip, but Elan’s glass panels are secured by a top rail above and a subtle floor channel below. The result is a sleek appearance, an economical use of materials and an easy-to-install solution. Designed for non-raked installations, Elan is also available as a modular balcony system complete with aluminium grille flooring.

Alan Green, Managing Director at neaco, said: “Elan offers all the classic characteristics that define our Spectrum balustrade and balcony range – namely its smooth contemporary aesthetics, maintenance-free durability and a modular system which provides exceptional design versatility and enables fast, low-energy construction with no welding or hot works required. Elan top rails and stanchions are powder coated for a non-chip, warm-to-touch finish and the glass is toughened with tinting options available. All of our latest modular balustrade and balcony options will be featured within a comprehensive new brochure which is due for release this summer.”

neaco launch new stanchion designs for metal balustrade range

neaco have added to the vast range of modular options available within our Modular balustrade range with the introduction of some attractive new stanchion designs.

Combining a stylish contemporary appearance with economical use of materials, our new Shape stanchion’s defining feature is ovular shaping which is also applied to the infill clips. The top of the stanchion meets the top handrail with a minimalist stem connector. As well as providing an alternative aesthetic option, the inherent strength of the Shape design allows the stanchion centres to be maximized to help work within budget constraints. Infill options include toughened glass, rails, wire, mesh and perforated panels.

Our new Quad stanchion provides another alternative to tubular stanchions with a square design which also uses a stem connector to meet the top handrail. Quad is also economical in its use of materials and provides an offset glass infill option in addition to inline toughened glass, rails, wire, mesh and perforated panels.

Alan Green, Managing Director at neaco, said: “We are delighted to be introducing Shape and Quad to the Spectrum range – they are the first of a wide range of exciting new product developments in the pipeline for 2014. These two new options now complement our ever-popular Centric tubular stanchion and Slim flat-bar stanchion. All of our latest modular options will be featured in a new comprehensive Spectrum brochure which is due for release this summer.”

Available with a class-leading Lifetime Guarantee, neaco’s Spectrum range of handrails, balustrade, balconies and structural glass offers a comprehensive choice of modular components to suit virtually any design need with low-energy, eco-friendly construction.

Available in powder coated aluminium or stainless steel, Spectrum’s smooth, clean lines offer a high architectural aesthetic which is maintenance-free. Aluminium Spectrum is available in a variety of solid or metallic colours as well as a wood-effect finish.
