hinchingbrooke hospital

Utilising a brightening design, neaco has manufactured, supplied, and installed its spectrum modular balustrade system to a new purpose-built operating theatre block in Cambridge.

the project

Hinchingbrooke Hospital, which is part of the North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust, is being rebuilt as the original building was experiencing structural issues. Located between the main hospital site and the Treatment Centre, the £30m operating theatre block project forms the second phase of the redevelopment of the whole site which is due to be completed by 2030.

Working closely with main contractors, GRAHAM Construction, neaco’s specification includes external stairs with ramps, fire access ramps, internal stairs, and a link bridge. The new block will replace the hospital’s main building’s theatres, which are approaching the end of their operational lifespan. There will be 7 state-of-the-art operating rooms, dedicated recovery areas, isolation rooms, reception areas, and a large staff area.

the specification

The hospital exterior’s fire access ramp solution consists of clear toughened heat-soaked 10mm thick glass for the safety of patients, along with centric aluminium stanchions and nylon golden yellow coated offset handrails. Nylon coating provides the highest level of abrasion resistance and the striking handrail colour enhances visibility and contract for DDA compliance.

The hospital’s interior stairs utilise neaco’s popular spectrum balustrade which is a modular nylon powder-coated aluminium system, complete with 10mm thick clear heat-soaked toughened inline glass and double offset handrails.

Our precision-manufactured components are designed to be combined in a multitude of ways to create bespoke variations that meet specific project needs. The Advantages of Modular Building and Modern Methods of Construction include:

Reduces Time

With components pre-manufactured and finished off-site, modular systems dramatically reduce the time required on-site compared to traditional construction methods.

Bespoke Design

The individual components are standardised, but combine for a wide range of specifications representing bespoke solutions to cater to all requirements.

Eco-Friendly

The off-site aspect of modular construction consumes less energy, less noise and less atmospheric pollution than hot works on-site.

Less Disruption

As the majority of manufacturing is off-site, the impact on the existing site is significantly low.

the process

To achieve an extensive colour range for unique projects, we have our very own powder-coating plant in-house. This means we can offer both nylon and polyester powder-coating in various RAL colours. Spectrum’s eye-catching choice of solid and metallic colours has made it a popular specification in hospitals and special needs applications for many years. It is also warm and smooth to the touch with a highly durable non-chip finish which makes it ideal for high-traffic areas.

We manufacture all our products in our 52,500-square-foot facility in North Yorkshire. We also source 100% of our raw materials in the UK, supporting other British businesses and protecting ourselves from global supply chain issues and mitigating energy prices which have driven up the cost of international logistics. At Neaco, we’re proud to call ourselves a company that combines over 50 years of heritage with a forward-thinking, innovative approach, meeting the demands of today’s construction industry.
